Designed by Anthony Gross and produced by specialist import/export manufacturing companies in Shanghai and Ningbo, 'Sculpture Unit' is a modular component - a simple shape that can be endlessly combined. Intended as a formal sculpture, it refers to the minimal works of the 1960's via the materials of objects found in Chinese supermarkets. A study of global manufacturing and costs of labour, 'Sculpture Unit' is manufactured in China and travels across the world to the UK where the modules are assembled by the artist. 'Sculpture Unit' started as a two-screen film of recycling activity taking place in Shanghai. Here workers, often using bicycles and trolleys, bring waste metals, wood and plastics that they have collected by hand, then painstakingly separate and pack onto lorries. |
